Scholarships Live Chat for Admitted UCI Students
Welcome, everybody. We're just going to give one minute for people to log on and we'll get started in a moment.
Kuni Kondo
06:00:18 PM
We will begin shortly
OK. I think we're going to get started. Well, congratulations to everybody for being admitted to UCI. My name is Queenie Condo. I'm one of the managers in the scholarship unit and I'm in charge of scholarship portfolio development and marketing. And I'm going to go ahead and let Fabian introduce himself.
Hey, good evening. My name is Fabian Ferozi. I'm the associate Director of the Scholarships department at UCI, and I'll hand it over to train.
Thank you, Fabian. Good afternoon. Sorry, good evening everyone and again congratulations on being admitted to UC Irvine. My name is Trang Chu. I am the other manager in the scholarship unit focusing on scholarship portfolio management. Welcome. Thank you for joining our live chat this evening and we will start it off the presentation by going through some basic financial aid information.
And then Fabian and Cooney will talked about the scholarships and different type of scholarships available at UC Irvine. And then we'll have time for you to ask questions at the end.
OK. So I'm going to talk about financial aid one-on-one at this.
Point I hope a lot of you, if not all of you have filled out the FAFSA or the dramatic application already and so you must know a little bit about financial aid. What is financial aid? It is basically fund that is provided to student to help pay for your education at.
At a university, is this a combination of give aid, including grant and scholarships and also loans? What is the FAFSA? FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The application when you filled out a FAFSA, they're going to ask for your information, your parent information. If you are a dependent student, they ask for the financial information from the prior prior year, for example.
For this upcoming academic year 2023-2024, the FAFSA gonna ask for the tax information from the year of 2021.
The FAB soil application already opened. The priority deadline is March 2nd, which is the deadline for California. When you filled out the FAFSA. You applying for both federal grant and also state funding. So March 2nd is the state deadline. If you haven't filled it out yet, go ahead and hurry up and fill out your FAFSA as soon as possible.
And then what is Kadas ADA? This is the California DREAM Act application. It is available for students who are not eligible to fill out the FAFSA, usually for student who are qualified for the California AB 540.
So when you filled out the FAFSA and or the dramatic application, there are a few terminology that you want to be familiar with and some of them are classic attendance. So cloud of attendance is basically how much it's going to cost you to go to school for nine months. It's will including tuition and mandatory fee room and board transportation and miscellaneous cost, so the cost of attendance.
Is based on your UH where you live. For example, if you're going to say I'm going to stay at home and commute to use service and you're gonna have a cost of attendance for a commuter.
If you plan to be on campus, your cost of attendance will take into account that you're going to have your.
On campus cost of housing and if you live on an apartment, your cost of attendance will including an estimate how much it's going to cost you for living on an apartment and go to UCI for that nine months period. And then the next terminology is also very important to pay attention to and it is called expected Family Contribution or EFC. This index is basically stands for how much it is can be.
And how much? The amount that can be reasonably expected for your family can contribute to your education. The expected family contribution is information that will be calculated automatically when you filled out the FAFSA or the TRIMAC application. It's purely based on information you provide on those applications. So it will follow you, you know any university you goes to. dot EFC number is the same because.
Based on your federal information, I'm sorry, your financial information and then the next terminology is financial need. Financial need is basically the difference between cost of attendance and expected family contribution. And this financial need is very important because the financial aid office based on your financial need to determine how much financial aid that you could be qualified for. The gold of your financial aid package is to.
Try to cover your financial need as much as possible, either with different type of financial award, which we're going to go over on the next slides.
OK, so.
When you looked at your financial aid package on my age, you're gonna see it listed different kind of financial aids that you qualify for and you're going to see there are several different type there are.
For the most common types are three different type of financial aids, grants, scholarships or loans. So if you see grant it basically money that you do not have to pay back. They can become from the federal or the state or university grant. From federal they have federal Pell Grant for example or SOG grant and then from the state of California you have Cal Grant middle class scholarships even though the worst.
This scholarship is actually one of the grand offer from the state of California and then you're going to see Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan and UCI grant those of funding from the university.
And so those things that you don't have to pay back the next UM.
Award you might see on your financial aid package called scholarships. Um similar with grant scholarship or fund that you don't have to pay back. However that my this scholarship is something that you might have to apply separately or you might not have to which Fabian and Kuni will go over later. But scholarships are funding that awarded to you based on different criteria. It can be based on merit, based on financial need or your leadership experience.
For your community, service, experienced or Overcoming adversity if you have any hardships or any overcoming adversity stories that you provided on the applications.
And then the last thing that you might see on your financial aid package are loans and loans, but the name of by the name of it is basically funding that you borrow and you will have to pay them back. Depend on different type of loans you borrow, the repayment will be different.
Most common type of loans that offer in your financial aid package or the federal student loans or subsidized and unsubsidized loans, those are student loans. The loan will be under the student names and the lender is the Department of Education and the repayment begins after you graduated which is 4 years from now. And another type of loans are the parent loans. We call the parent PLUS loan which is parent loan for undergraduate students.
Um now this loan the borrower is the parent UM and the lender stood the Department of Education. However because this is a parent loan is the repayment begins one year after the last disbursement and also it is based on credit checked. The student loan is just the credit check is not required. Student is auto approved for these student loans. These different type of loans have different type of interest rate also the loan fees.
There are different. So if you are planning on accepting any of the loans that offer for you, we suggest that you know you looked on to our financial aid website at UCI we listed out the different interest rate and loan fee for different type of loans that you will be interested in.
And then when you looked at your financial aid package, you see these different type of award, the grant are usually automatically accepted for you. Similar with scholarships, you don't have to accept them when you see it on your award package. That mean that Israeli awarded to you. You don't have to go in there and accept the loans are something that if you want to, you would go on to your financial aid package on my aid to accept the loan. You can also you know when you accept the loan.
You can also choose how much you want to accept. You don't have to accept the entire amount that was offered to you. You can adjust the amount throughout the year and then when you looked at your financial aid package, that will show you the total award you got awarded for the whole academic year. However, the disbursement going to happen at the beginning of each quarter. So let's say you got awarded a scholarship for 3000, then keep in mind that only 1/3 of that will be dispersed.
At the beginning of fall and then you know another 1000 gonna be dispersed in the beginning of winter and the last 1000 gonna be dispersed in the beginning of spring quarter.
Um, those are the basic financial aid information I'm gonna pass it on to.
Fabian then talked about scholarships.
Thank you, Train. Um, so I will be covering. I will be providing generic information about the scholarships at UCI. So what the scholarships do we have for prospective admitted students. The first group of the scholarships are called Distinguished scholarships. These are the scholarships that no application is required. In fact, when you apply for admission to UC campuses through the common app, that's common app is going to be used for selection process. So we use the information that you provided.
That application for the purpose of selecting you for distinguished scholarships. We have three different types. Regions scholarship, which is only for California residents, Chancellor's Excellence Scholarship, which is only for California residents again, and Directors Scholarship, which is for domestic out-of-state students as well as international students. Now, once you have submitted your statement of intent to register and you decided that you're going to come to UCI, you're able to apply for.
Campus wide scholarships at UCI in regards to Karen 2324 academic year for the fall 2023. You have the opportunity in month in the month of May to apply to these scholarships and Cooney is going to cover that for you.
In terms of funding for these scholarships, we have different funding sources. So we have a school specific scholarships that are funded by schools at UCI. It could be School of Engineering, it could be a school of Biological Sciences. Whichever school that you are attending will have its own scholarships. In addition to that we have a school specific scholarships that are funded by various donors. These are private donors that fund them beside the school specific scholarship we have across campus.
Their scholarships. These are scholarships that are not specific to a major or a school, but it is for everyone that is enrolled at UCI. They could be funded by various private donors, or they could be jointly funded by various donors and UCI in terms of funding.
Now I'm going to cover the UCI Distinguished Scholarship. So this is for students who demonstrate the remarkable academic excellence during their high school program and during their Community College program. If they are transferring students, we look at accomplishments that have been done, extracurricular activities that have been done, as well as leadership experience or community service experiences that these students may have. All that information is available to us through your common admission application that you submitted.
In order to be admitted to various universities or various UC campuses. And the way that we select the students is based on a holistic review of our application either based on merit or based on financial need. But we look at leadership and community service experiences as well. As I mentioned the names of those scholarship, Regional scholarship is purely Meritus scholarship, Chancellors Excellence Scholarship is a need based scholarship and the Director of scholarship is also a Meritus scholarship.
You know the, you see Common Admission application was the source for selection. No other applications were required. Really, you didn't need to do anything about it. In terms of the offers, a lot of offers have already gone out to students, but the final date for offering one of these scholarships to prospective admitted students for freshmen is April 25th. So by April 21st, 5th, we have sent all the offers out for these.
Students. It's these scholarships only offered to prospective students one time before they joined the university that they would like to join. For the transfer students, that date is May 23rd.
Now I'm going to cover.
The terms of these scholarships, So the first one is a regional scholarship. As I mentioned, it is for California residents. It is $5000 per year.
And in terms of tenure, it is renewable for three additional consecutive years. So it's really for four consecutive years in total for freshmen and two consecutive years for transfers in order to renew that for the second year and the third year and the 4th year.
And you need to have a minimum of 12 units per quarter, which is our full time enrollment requirement. The minimum is 12 units and you need to have a cumulative GPA of 3.25 by the end of the spring quarter of the year in order to be qualified to receive that for the second year. Please keep that in mind. For the freshman, this scholarship is for four years, for the transfers is only for two years.
Chancellor's excellence in scholarship is a need based scholarship and the amount is $6000 per year. The 10 year ship is 2 years regardless of whether you're a freshman or transfer. The eligibility criteria in terms of renewability is minimum 12 units per quarter enrollment which is our full time enrollment and a cumulative GPA of 2.5 by the end of the spring quarter in order to be renewed for the 2nd year.
Directors scholarship is a merit based scholarship. It is $10,000 per year for the term of two years, so the 10 year she is for two years. It can be renewed for the second year as long as the student is still enrolled full time 12 units per quarter and could meet the GPA requirements of 2.75 and higher at the end of the spring quarter in order to receive that for a second year.
The next slide that I'm going to cover are the benefits of these scholarships. So for the regional scholarships, it provides guaranteed housing. Guaranteed housing means that you see I provide you an uncle on campus housing opportunity. It does not mean that your cost for the housing covered, it just means that we have provided you a housing option on campus.
You will have priority enrollment. You will be contacted by the Registrar's office to enroll in courses that you would like to do, and since you're a regional scholar, if you are a recipient of that, you have earlier opportunity to enroll in those classes that you would like to take for that specific quarter. You have graduate level library privileges and you have an attention on your transcripts and once you're graduating on your diploma. For the Chancellor, this excellent scholarship, the only benefit that it has is guaranteed.
Housing. It doesn't have the other three that region has. And this is the same scenario for the directors of scholarship. It only has guaranteed housing. And we did. We did put the web page addresses there where you can get the information. But if you just explore our financial aid website and go toward the scholarship pages, the informations about these three scholarships should be available there for you. And if it is not, in case you have further questions, you can always contact our.
E-mail address in order to get more information about it and Connie can provide that e-mail address information to you. Having said that, I'm going to hand it off to Kuni.
Thank you, Fabian. So I'm going to go a little bit over over our Scholarship Universe platform. So Scholarship Universe is the platform that we use for our students to apply to our campus wide scholarships. So our platform is located at uci.scholarshipuniverse.com and for incoming students that includes freshmen and transfer students, the application period.
Will be from May starting May 3rd to May 31st for the 2324 academic year. And once you're a student here, you'll be enrolled. You'll be applying in January for academic year 23. I'm sorry, 2425 year awards. So if you're here, If yes, I are here. Be sure that you apply also again in January for the next academic year.
Our our review process for our applications and our scholarships. We looked at 5 focus areas, which are academic achievement, financial need, leadership, experience, community service and overcoming adversity. So if you have these experiences or achievements, be sure to tell us about them in your application so that we know that you're a good candidate for these scholarships.
Some of the highlights of our platform are that students will answer general and scholarship specific questions. They'll answer questions about themselves to tell us about your interest, your hobbies, your academic achievements and whatnot, and that will help us to match you to scholarships. Those system will match you to scholarships that you match for based on all these questions that you answer. So our recommendation is that once you're in the system.
To answer as many of the questions that the that the system gives you so that you'll be able to match to more scholarships and the more questions you answer.
The more you'll be able to test scholarships, so answer as many as possible.

If you have trouble with audio please refresh the page.
The other thing about our platform is that we've tried to get rid of the long form essay questions. So you'll be able to answer short answer questions for the applications and get straight to the point of the information that's really important to you. And then as I mentioned, we have matching in scholarship universe. So answer those questions to match to more scholarships and another thing about.
Where you thought form is that it also provides vetted external scholarships. Once the application period for the campus wide scholarships is over, we'll open it up so that you can use it as a tool to apply towards outside scholarships that are that are outside of UCI. So foundation scholarships or community scholarships that might be out there that you match to will also be provided.
For you so that you can apply to those as well.
Some other scholarship resources that are available on campus. There are a few scholarships that may not be on our system. The majority of the departments and schools do have their scholarships within our Scholarship Universe system, but certain scholarships require additional requirements or research, and those may or may not be on our system. So we do recommend that you ask your departments to see if there's any.
Additional scholarships that are available for you during the academic year.
And sometimes there's additional scholarships that are new that may come up that aren't on our system because the the timing of the the scholarship. So if that's if that's something that happens, those might be additional scholarships that are also available to you.
As I mentioned, you can also apply to external scholarships, so our system does provide a tool to do that, but we also recommend using other scholarship search enginessuchasscholarship.com for example. There's lots of scholarship search engines out there that you can use to find additional scholarships.
Out in the community so.
So uh.
We're going to go over some frequently asked questions before um the question and answer portion of our presentation. So how does scholarships affect my financial aid package? Typically when you receive a scholarship it will reduce or replace your need based loans or work study first and then.
That scholarship will fill in that portion.
How do I receive my scholarship fund? Scholarships are divided in three and this first per quarter. So as Trang mentioned earlier, if you have a $3000 scholarship, you'll receive 1000 in fall, winter, and spring.
And do I need to have a specific residency status to receive a campus wide or school specific scholarship? No. We have scholarships for any kind of residency status, so please be sure to apply on Scholarship Universe. And again, if you are for example, a student that's not able to file a vascular ARCADA, we would have need information for those students, but you would still be eligible for merit scholarships that are on the system.
So don't be discouraged, You're still able to apply to lots of scholarships on our system.
If you get a scholarship, If you get a UCI scholarship and then transfer it to another institution, can I take it with me? Unfortunately, no. UCI scholarships are not transferable. However, if you are getting like an external scholarships, you may want to talk to your foundation or the organization where you receive the scholarship to see if you can transfer that scholarship.
What happens to my scholarship if I withdraw? For a term, scholarships at UCI require full time enrollment, which is a minimum of 12 units per quarter. But if you do have to withdraw or take a leave, you can't submit an appeal to be considered to keep the scholarship. But there's no guarantee of approval and it's like case by case basis.
Do I have to submit a FASFA or Canada to receive a scholarship? Again, so no you don't have to submit a password in Canada, but if you do submit the if you are able to and do submit the password or Canada application then you can be considered for need based scholarships.
And then are there scholarships for international students? Yes, we do have scholarships for international students on our system. And as an additional resource, we do recommend going to www.ifa.org. They do have some additional resources for international students as well as some scholarship listings, so please visit that.
And then finally, uh, we have a resource page for you. Um.
Or questions regarding different types of topics so for.
Questions about the Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan, the Middle Class Scholarship, Cal Grant, Vasa Cada Loans or special circumstance appeals? Please contact Financial Aid.
You have questions about residency fees, enrollment or withdrawals. Those questions would go to the registrar.
Alex
06:27:11 PM
Are the interest rates fixed for loans
Payments and 529 plans that those questions will go to the central cashier. Questions about the campuswide Honors Collegium, we'll go to CHC, so campus quite honestly, Jim. And then any questions about your admin decision or statement of intent to register, well, those questions should go to admissions and then if you have questions about reporting or receiving external scholarships. So again these are scholarships that come from.
Outside of UCI, UH, if you have questions about those or questions about the disbursement of those to you, those questions will go to. Those questions will go to our fiscal unit in the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and their e-mail is fafiscal@uci.edu. And then of course if you have general scholarship questions about campus wide scholarships or the distinguished scholarships, those questions will come to us at scholarships@uci.edu and I believe this.
QR Code will take you to our website, so at this point I'd like to open up the floor to questions. Our chat is moderated, so we do have a couple of moderators in the background so that we don't get a lot of repeated questions. But please feel free to ask your questions in the chat box and we'll try to get to as many of them as we can.
If you are having trouble with your audio I do recommend refreshing the page. Ohh I guess if you can't hear me then that would be an issue, but yeah if you are having.
Kind of a laggy audio, it might also help with you.
And then Fabian, are you able to see the chat box?
Yeah, I can see the chat boxes, chat box at this time there there. There is one question from Alex regarding the interest rate fixed for loans trained. Do you want to respond to that?
Mero
06:28:50 PM
When do distinguished scholarships get awarded?
Sure. Yes, Um so are the interest rates fixed for loans is the question. And the answer is that the interest rate will be fixed for the loan that you're taking out for that specific academic year because this is federal loans. So the interest rate might change from academic year to academic year. So that's why we suggested for every academic year that you want to take out loan, just making sure you checked for the interest rate and the loan fee and are financially.
This financially and scholarship website at UCF, I will have that information update annually for you. So and when I said academically it's mean we started in the fall of let's say for this upcoming academic year start in the fall of 2023 and ending in June of 2024. Same thing with repayment, went in time for repayment. The interest rate you take out for that get McGee will be the interest rate that you know it goes with you into repayment.

Jasmine

^due to the visa status
Riya
06:30:13 PM
Is there a way we can apply if not selected through common app?
Thank you Train and Mirror is asking when do you distinguish the scholarships get awarded. So just to let you know, we are sending the offers in batches. Quite a lot of offers have already gone out. But for the freshman, admitted freshman students, the last day is April 25th. So there is another I believe today is 19. About another week is left for additional offers to go out and for the transfers it is May.
23rd is the last day, so if you received it by that day, great congratulation. If you didn't receive it by that day, it means you were not selected among those recipients.
I will respond to Jasmine's question regarding if someone hasn't been declared as a resident California resident yet because of their visa status, will they still get the California Residence Scholarship. So when it comes to Distinguished Scholarships, we look at the visa status right now. So whatever it is right now and if it changes later on, unfortunately it doesn't help. But when it comes to campus wide cross campus scholarship and school specific scholarships.
Once you enrolled and you are.
As they enroll these students, at that time, the system is going to update it. So once the system updates that you are considered the California resident at that point of time.
Emilie
06:31:31 PM
How do we see if we were rewarded any of these scholarships?
Yes, yes. Is there a way we can apply if not selected through the Common app. So unfortunately for the Distinguished Scholarships, there is not a way to apply if not selected. However, we do highly encourage you to apply to the Scholarship Universe application because there are several scholarships there that you may qualify for.
Pranav
06:31:52 PM
What's the average dollar amount that a student receives in campus-wide scholarships?
Emily is asking how do we see if we were rewarded any of these scholarships if it is regarding the distinguished.
Relationships. UH, you will receive an award notification letter from the admissions office letting you know about that. And if you're talking about campus wide scholarships for the next year or the school specific scholarships, once you have been selected as a recipient, you will receive an award notification letter from Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships to let you know about that. The other place that you can see that beside these notification emails is your My Portal. You go to your My Portal and you might see.
An added item there as a scholarship showing up on your financial aid package.
Andrew
06:32:45 PM
if I already get cal grant, does that mean I don't get blue and gold?
Pranav, I could answer that question too. What's the average dollar amount that the student receives in campus by the scholarships? It really varies and we have different endowments with different aboard amounts. We have scholarships from $1000 all the way through scholarships that are almost 7500 to 8000. And we have also a $10,000 scholarship. So it varies from 1 donor to another. We have a combination of all kind of scholarship amounts.
And I will answer Andrew's question regarding Cal Grant and Blue and Gold, It is really a financial aid question whether we help you out with that quickly so you can either get Cal Grant scholarship.
Brandon
06:33:36 PM
For payment, does the school charge it from my bank account or how do I pay it?
Sorry, Cal Grant or Blue and Gold. You cannot get both of them because the purpose of these two are to pay your system wide tuition and mandatory fees. Systemwide tuition and mandatory fees are about 95% of the total tuition and mandatory fees and you can either receive call grant from the State of California to pay that or Blue angle. Normally those who are not qualified for Cal Grant might be qualified for Blue and Gold and that covers those fees for.
So I do want to point out that this presentation is mostly focused on scholarship. So if you do have questions about financial aid, we do recommend talking with someone from the financial aid part of our office. And their e-mail again is finaid.uci.edu. But if you do have a few simple questions, we'll try to answer those.
Brandon asked for payment. Does the school charge it from my bank account or how do I pay it?
Crystal
06:34:20 PM
For the scholarships that reduce need based aid, is it for all scholarships or just the ones if granted are at UCI?
Do you know?
I'm I'm assuming I don't know what Brandon means with this question. I'm assuming you're talking about how to pay for your.
Tuition and mandatory fees. If that is the question, it depends on whether your what kind of financial aid package you have and whether you're an on campus student, off campus student, or commuter student. If you're an on campus student, our system does it automatically utilizing your financial aid package for you. If you don't have any financial aid, you're paying it out of pocket. Then you just have to meet the deadline. If you are an off campus student, our system doesn't doesn't automatically cover your room.
Board. It does cover your tuition and mandatory fees but not room and board. So you will get the any kind of credit to your toward your banking bank account if you have a deposit direct deposit set up and then you can use that in order to pay for your room and board. Same scenario with the commute.
Can I add something to that Fabian?
Yes.
Alana
06:35:39 PM
Are scholarship applications considered in conjunction with the uc application or entirely separately?
Sure. OK. So great question because we're talking about financially and scholarships. So for your question, Brandon, if you have financial aid including grant and scholarship or even loans that you accepted, what happened is that at the beginning of each academic, I'm sorry, at the beginning of each quarter, most all of your financial aid for that quarter will automatically go into pay for your charges for that quarter.
Which including tuitions and then if there is any leftover that financial aid funding will be sent to you. So for refund you will set up either to receive a paper check or receive direct deposit. However, let's say if you're financially is not enough to cover all of your tuition fee or maybe if you stay on campus your charges is more, then you will see the balance on your sort account or sort bill and then you will go on to that.
That account and provide your payment option and that's how you can pay.
Khanh
06:36:56 PM
If you receive the UCI distinguished scholarship, will that change the amount of grant I will get from the FAFSA and Cal Grant even if I still have to pay out of pocket?
And Crystal is asking about for the scholarships that reduce need based aid, is it for all the scholarship or just for the ones if granted at UCI. The need based scholarships really replace your need based loans or work study depending on how much it is initially it reduces your your loans. So it is really for any scholarship, any scholarship that you receive is going toward your loan work component and reducing your loans or your work study.
Savannah
06:37:10 PM
if we haven't received a scholarship offer yet, how likely is it we will get an offer between now and the 25th?
Emilie
06:37:16 PM
How do we know if we’ve received one of these scholarships? Is it via email?
Wanna ask our scholarship applications considered in conjunction with the UC application, or entirely separately? So it's both.
Mero
06:37:31 PM
Is there anyway to make a scholarship application stand out? Should essays be written in a anecdotal format or captivating way?
Jasmine
06:37:37 PM
for the students who aren't declared as residents yet due to the visa status, would they still be considered for scholarships that are available to California residents?
For the Distinguished scholarships, those are considered based on the UC application. We do have campus wide or campus based scholarships from departments or schools that are on the system and those would be applied for separately and those you could start applying on May 3rd.
All right, Con is asking if you received the UCI Distinguished Scholarship, will that change the amount of grant I will get from the FAFSA and Cal Grant even if I still have to pay out of pocket scholarships. Really do not touch the Pell Grant or the Cal Grant it we our goal is that it doesn't reduce any kind of grants that you might get. It is only going to be counted toward loans and work work study.

06:38:53 PM
When can we apply for campus-wide scholarships for the 2023-2024 year? And when is the deadline?
And then Savannah is asking if you haven't received this scholarship offer by now, how likely is it that we will get an offer between now and the 25th. It's a difficult question to answer. I I really cannot give an answer in terms of like percentage, what the percentage would be. But like the only thing that I could share is that almost 80% to 90% of the offers for the freshmen have been sent out but close to 50% of the offers were transfers have.
And send out. So there is still opportunity until that time. I just can't give you a specific number.
And I believe I answered that question before. Emily is asking, how do we know if we received one of these scholarships? Is it via e-mail? Yes, you will receive an e-mail from admissions office regarding distinguished scholarships. And then later on once you join your CI in applying to the campus where the scholarships, you will receive an e-mail from our office, office of financial aid and scholarships at that time.
Mara asked Is there any way to make a scholarship application stand out? Should essays be written in an anecdotal format or captivating way?
Um, I think.
Gabi

Just to clarify, the Scholarship Universe Platform is specifically for Campus Wide Scholarships & scholarships outside the UCI realm?
I think what's important is that you get the important information across, like why something is important to you, why something made impact, why why whatever you're talking about is important.
In the case of our scholarship applications, we really tried to cut down how much room you have to write.
As an essay, this is so. They're like short answer questions, so you want to kind of get pretty.
To the point, pretty quickly in our in our application, because you won't have a whole lot of room to write. So I think you wanna be sure to just give the important details about what what's important about what you're telling us.

Are new students selected every year?
Tiantian
06:40:44 PM
Has Director scholarship been sent with offer letter for international fresh students?
And Jasmine has a question for students who aren't declared as residents yet due to the visa status, would they still be considered for scholarships that are available to California residents? And when we're making this, when this election committees are making the decision about the scholarships will be making those decisions based on the current information. So we're looking at current status and hopefully if you're your residency changes that will be updated in our system for the scholarships for the 2425.
Academic year when you apply in January.
Yeah. And ask, will there be a recording of the session I can watch again later? Yes, we are recording it. And then we will try to figure out how to get that recording from admissions and then we'll post it on our website.
And Nicole is asking, do you have to submit your state of intent to register before receiving scholarship awards? And when we are sending these offer letters, you don't have to like do CSIR, we send those offers for you to decide whether you would like to come to UCI with this scholarship.
Effatha
06:41:43 PM
Are most scholarships, whether external or school-based, considering the financial situation of the student?
Allison
06:41:46 PM
Are there any scholarships that cover tuition specifically?
On the top of admission or not. So when it comes to distinguished scholarship and we just send the offers to admitted students, they don't need to, Sir. But in order to receive it, of course you have to IR and come to UCI in order to receive the fund itself.
Jennifer
06:41:58 PM
If we don't receive the scholarships, are we able to send an appeal of some sort to try to reapply?
And Dara asked when can we apply for Campus Wide Scholar scholarships for the 2324 year and when is the deadline so you'll be able to start applying on May 3rd? That's a Wednesday and it will be open until May 31st.
Brandon

How does my performance in school (grades) affect my scholarships?
Syahla
06:42:37 PM
do we have to accept our decision and submit SIR first in order to apply for scholarship?
Gabby asked just to clarify, the Scholarship Universe platform is specifically for campus wide scholarships and scholarships outside the UCI realm. So yes and yes. However, during the application period we will be turning off the external scholarships function because it does interfere a little bit with the matching algorithm for campus scholarship. So once the the application period.
It's over. We'll turn that function back on and you'll be able to use it for external scholarships, but in the meantime, you can use other search engines as well, and it'll it'll be like similar scholarships as well.
Michelle
06:43:26 PM
Is the Spanish live published already? If so, where can I find it?
Just that Jessica asked. Our new student selected every year, and I think I'm guessing this is about distinguished scholarship. So new students in the sense that new incoming students are selected every year, but once a student is selected for our distinguished scholarship, that scholarship follows that student for the tenure of their scholarship. So new students that are continuing students would not be selected for distinguished scholarships.
If you haven't already received one.
Nathanael
06:43:51 PM
Is there an order in which freshman distinguished scholarships are evaluated? Are they evaluated in order of date of submission of UC application?
Tian Tian is asking has directed a scholarship been sent with offer letter for international freshman students. As I mentioned, these offers are sent in batches, so even for the directors scholarship for the freshmen offers, May may go out all the way through April 25th.
If father asks our most scholarships, whether external or school based, considering the financial situation of those student, it's it's like 5050. Some some scholarships are solely based on merit and it doesn't take that into account.
But there are a lot of scholarships that also do take that information into account.
Hannah
06:44:23 PM
does the act and or sat play a factor in receiving a uci scholarship?
And train. You might be able to answer Allison's question.
I think you're muted train.
Yeah.
Hello, sorry, maybe I'm on mute. So Allison question is, are there any scholarships that cover tuition specifically? And the answer is yes on the campus wise scholarship that you apply for on scholarship Universe because funding are coming from a variety of sources. Some donor might specify that the scholarship will just cover tuition specifically or partial of this tuition.
Thank you, Train. Jennifer is asking if you don't receive the scholarships, are we able to send an appeal of some sort to try to reapply? If that is regarding the UCI campus wide and school specific scholarships, there is no appeal.
Process actually because selection committees select recipients sometime during the May time frame for the upcoming academic year, so there is no appeal process for that.
Randomness How does my performance in school or grades affect my scholarships?
It depends on the scholarship, so some scholarships do require certain minimum GPA approved for.
Victor
06:46:11 PM
Can international students apply in uci.scholarshipuniverse.com?
And if if you don't maintain that GPA, you might have that scholarship taken away. So it depends on the scholarship. The distinguished scholarships do have a minimum GPA requirement, so if you're referring to those, then you know I would check the terms of your award letter for, and that applies to really any scholarship. You would probably get a award letter that states if you have to maintain a certain academic standing.
Ciara is asking, do we have to accept our decision and submit a Sir first in order to apply for scholarships? The scholarship.
Line.
The application period is actually in the month of May and it is for students who have been admitted and submitted their IR. So it's only for those admitted students who are coming to UCI that they can apply during the month of May. Because your deadline for this Siri is May 1st and our application is going to open on May 3rd. So once you did your SSI and you are coming into UCI, you can then in the month of May from May 23rd through end of the May, apply to a scholarship. So yes, you're so I should be in before you.
Or if you are a transfer student, you would you would have just been admitted. So the transfer Sir deadline is universe. So for the transfer students you can apply before you submit your IR.
Hannah
06:47:32 PM
If my daughter received a uci grant will she still qualify for the distinguished scholarships?
So ask, is this Spanish live published already? If so, where can I find it? I'm not.
We didn't have a Spanish presentation, but I'm not sure if the financial aid office had a Spanish presentation.
Do you know Fabian?
Yeah.
I am not aware of it. Could be they might have had the Spanish version and they may have recorded it, but I'm not. I'm not 100% sure on it.
Yeah, I'm not, I'm not sure. I may have to check with the financial aid office to see if they had a Spanish version of the financial aid presentation, but unfortunately we didn't have a Spanish version presentation of the scholarships.
Nathan is asking is there an order in which freshman distinguished the scholarships are evaluated? Are they evaluated in order of date of submission of UC application? No, It has nothing to do with when you have applied through common app. We get a list of admitted students from the admissions office and then once we have the list of.
All the admitted students we we go through their common app application and select some of them for the distinguished scholarship. So it has nothing to do with when you actually apply data, doesn't matter.
Brandon
06:49:18 PM
If I receive outside schoolarships and it surpasses my costs would my financialaid from UCI decrease?
And then Hannah is asking, does the ACT or SAT play a factor in receiving UCI scholarship? As you know, SAT and ACT doesn't have any role in terms of admission at all and we try not to use it even for the scholarships at all. We'll look at that, but it's not really a factor into selection. We see that as a positive thing that somebody applied and got some score on it, but it is not a major factor. As I mentioned, we're looking at those.
Leah
06:49:28 PM
Will I be able to apply to scholarships through scholarship universe while attending UCI?
Five elements, those five factors for the selection.
Victor asked Can international students apply in uci.scholarshipuniversity.com Yes, you can apply. You wouldn't necessarily be eligible for need based scholarships because you wouldn't be able to.
While the Fast forward to Canada, however, you would still be eligible for merit scholarships and you can still use it to try to find scholarships that are external when that function is turned on.
And Hannah is asking if my daughter received the UCI grant, will she still qualify for the distinguished scholarship? Yes, anybody can.
Sierra
06:50:10 PM
How will we be notified about these scholarships? Personal email? UCI Portal?
Qualify for the UCI distinguished scholarship regardless of what kind of financial aid package they get. As we have regions for the merit, we don't even look at the financial aid package and for for regions and for directors. But for this chancellors scholarship, we do look at the financial aid package. But yes, if somebody gets you say grant doesn't mean that they cannot qualify for distinguished scholarship.
Brandon's asked if I receive outside scholarship and it surpasses my cost with my financial aid from UC ID crease. The answer is, is yes. It might be because if you remember at the beginning of the presentation, the cost of attendance is how much it's estimated with like your budget going to UCI for the academic year and then you'll finance and then subtract your expected family contribution if you filled out a FAFSA.
For Canada, the financial need is the how much room you have to to receive financial aid or scholarship including internally from UCI or externally. So for this academic year, the cost of attendance vary depend on your living status. It vary from 30,000 if you are commuter to up to around 40,000 if you are living on campus. So that is your cause.
Let's say if you have a expected family contribution is 0, then you'll need is 40,030 thousand or 40,000 let's say if you receive an outside scholarship up to that much, then yes, it will just replace all of the other. It will just replace the entire room in your financial need. So there will be no financial aid or.
The scholarship to be fitted to that room.
Crystal
06:52:03 PM
For the scholarships that reduce federal aid, is it for all scholarships or just the ones granted are at UCI?
OK. And may I ask, will I be able to apply to scholarships through Scholarship Universe while attending UCI? So yes, definitely we have a lot of scholarships for continuing students and for continuing students, scholarship application period will be in the month of January. So when January comes around, be sure to apply on Scholarship Universe and then throughout the rest of the year.
Keenan
06:52:36 PM
If I get a external scholarship, say $1000. Will it be applied the 1st quarter or be separated $333 per quarter.
You can still apply to external scholarships. Um, you can use Scholarship Universe as a tool to find and then apply to those scholarships on their web pages.
Sierras, how will we be notified about these scholarships? Personal e-mail you CI portal. So if you're referring to the distinguished scholarships such as Regents, Chancellors or Directors scholarships, those you will see on your UCI admissions portal, this should be somewhere on there. I'm not sure specifically because we don't actually have access to the student view of the portal. So if you do have questions about the portal itself, it would probably be a question for admissions.
Chris.
Crystal is asking for the scholarships that reduce federal aid. Is it for all the scholarships or just the ones granted at UCI? Crystal, we do not touch or reduce federal aid. Federal aid is really, if you're talking about federal Pell Grant.
Will not touch that. If you're talking about federal aid such as federal loans, yes, any scholarships that we get is supposed to reduce the loan work component and it will reduce the federal loans. But when it comes to federal grants like Pell Grant, we will not touch that. Even when it comes to California State Grant, Cal Grant, we do our best not to touch that at all.
And Keenan is asking about if I get external scholarships say $1000, will it be applied in the first quarter or be separated for $333 per quarter and it is actually going to be divided by three Keenan and you will receive $333 per quarter as.
As the train was mentioning in the beginning that any kind of aid is going to be divided by three because we have 3/4 in our academic year.
And you'll and you'll receive an extra dollar in one of those quarters to make it 1000.
Right.
Hannah
06:54:37 PM
can u please elaborate on what a uci grant is?
So I could talk about the Hannahs question. Can you please elaborate on what UCI grant is? So as you know, we have a federal Pell Grant and then a State of California provide Cal Grant. Calgarian is twice as much as the Pell Grant and it's supposed to pay for the systemwide tuition and mandatory fees. In addition to Cal Grant, the UC system has blue and gold.
Which does the same thing as the Cal Grant. It pays the system by tuition and mandatory fees. If you're qualified to receive Cal Grant, that will do it for you. If you do not receive Cal Grant, you qualify for Blue and Gold. It will cover your tuition and mandatory fees, and if you receive none of them, UCI is going to give you the same amount in order to cover.
Lindsey
06:55:32 PM
Do students have to be enrolled in the summer quarter to keep receiving a scholarship?
Tuition and mandatory fees, if that is what your financial aid package is indicating in terms of the need that you have. So you see, I provides grants in order to cover the need based area after Federal Pell Grant and after State of California, Cal Grant or Blue Angel.
And Lindsey is asking, do students have to be enrolled in the summer quarter to keep receiving a scholarship. The scholarship is dedicated for the 3/4, so you will receive that. It will be divided by three and you will receive that in fall, winter and spring quarter. We have a summer sessions, we have 3 summer sessions. It has its own budget and its own its own financial aid outside these nine months financial aid package that train was mentioning and.

Is it possible to reapply to honors
Pranav
06:56:32 PM
I know you mentioned that there is a range for campus-wide scholarships but if you had to give a general number what is the average amount an applicant receives?
From time to time we have fund availability for summer scholarship as well that the students can get for the summer. So normally your scholarships during the academic year does not apply to your summer quarter.
I've been asked, is it possible to reapply to Honors? So for Campuswide Honors Collegium, I I believe you can apply to the honors program even if you're not admitted as one. So I would check with the campus wide audience Collegium about that. I think their website is.
Honors.uci.edu or you can e-mail honors@uci.edu about that.
Pranav is asking. I know you mentioned that there is a range for campus by the scholarship, but if you had to give a general number, what is the average amount on applicant receives? If I wanted just to look at the whole list statistics and the ranges and I wanted to come up with some rough numbers for what the average dollar amount would be for a scholarship, I could mention that it could be around $3000.
Aviral
06:57:28 PM
If we have submitted the SIR, will we still be considered for the distinguished scholarships?
Based on my experience, Uh, do you agree?
Yeah, I would agree. I think typically scholarships are around like 3:00 to 5:00.
Through the 5000 maybe?
And there's some.
Yeah, I was trying to be on the.
Yeah.
Yeah. And there's some lower and there's some higher. So it's, it's a range, but probably on average about 3000.
And then Admiral is asking if we have submitted this or will we still be considered for the Distinguished Scholarships?
Is she a transfer or a freshman? So.
Yeah, It depends on whether you're a freshman. Yeah, I mean.
I will leave it to you. Can you respond to this?
So.
I think.
For freshmen, I think the results will be.
Finalize soon uh if uh if you receive that UH for transfers, I think there may be.
Additional that might come out so you could, if you were to Sir really early, you could still be considered for a distinguished scholarship, But does that sound right, Fabian?
Yeah.
Keenan
06:59:08 PM
Will being in Honors Collegium help with UCI scholarships?
Correct, Correct. Yeah. I mean, if you decided to Sr. before even receiving a scholarship, that doesn't preclude you. That doesn't exclude you from distinguished scholarship at all. We're not looking at the status whether you have already styled or not because the distinguished scholarships are for admitted students regardless whether they have a salt or not, so.
Right.
Yeah. The Sir has no impact on whether you received the distinguished scholarship or not.
Um, Keenan is asking will being in Honors Collegium help with UCI scholarships? We do know that some honors students do receive scholarships, but we're not specifically targeting just honors student to receive a scholarship. We have a holistic view. We're looking at everyone that is admitted, regardless whether they are in honor programs.
Or not.
Nathan
06:59:49 PM
are middle class scholarships guaranteed if we're under the income requirements
OK. And we're almost out of time. So maybe one last question. And then if you have additional questions, you can always e-mail us at scholarships@uci.edu.
David, do you want to take the last question?
Gabi
07:00:03 PM
Thank you for the outstanding info & insights Kuni, Fabian & Trang!
Yes. So for the middle class scholarship, as long as you're eligible to receive that, it does not matter which campus you really attend, you get the same amount that the state of California decides about that and you will receive it. So if you are within that requirement, you will definitely receive it. Just keep that in mind that.
Certain campuses may already put it in your financial aid package right now and UCI usually does that during October time frame, September, October time frame. So if you're qualified to receive that and you have got something from any campus that says that you receive it, you will definitely receive that at UCI two. It's just that the processing time of this campus versus that campus may be different.
I also want to just plug our social media at UCI scholarships on Instagram and we also do have a Discord if you have additional questions. And sometimes it's good to follow because sometimes we do get scholarships that are new and not necessarily within our application.
Timeline. So sometimes additional opportunities will show up on our scholarship social media, so please follow us. Also our website isopas.uci.edu/scholarships. And if you have questions, we do take appointments on our website. Again, if you have additional questions, feel free to e-mail us at scholarships@uci.edu and we'll be happy to answer those questions. Thank you.
Just to add to what Kuni was saying is that we do have actually in person presentation during the celebrate event which happens this Saturday on campus. So if you are actually going to attend that event.
On Saturday, we do have a scholarship presentation at 10:00 AM in the Anteater Pavilion and you could actually come there and get even more information through the presentation that we have there. And I wanted just to thank Gabby for her for the participation.
